The TV is showing what the laptop is sending it. If your LCD is 1024×768, you probably won’t be able to get a widescreen resolution out of it, though you might be able to choose something larger in the “square” shape. Check your manual or the support area of HP’s web site to see what your particular laptop is capable of.

It depends on your laptop video capabilities and what modes the TV tells your laptop it has with plug’n pray with VGA.

With my widescreen laptop I can display at the full 1366×768 resolution of my 40″ LCD at home. But on a motel 32″ LCD with same resolution, the TV only told VGA on the same laptop about the 4:3 PC modes it supported, so the best I could do was 1024×768 which was only the proper aspect ratio on the LCD when pillar boxed (black bars on sides). But it was still bigger than my laptop screen for playing DVD’s
